The architects at Massachusetts-based Cambridge Seven Associates are fast
establishing themselves as masters of the waterfront. Witness their
93,000-square-foot Marine Science Center at Kuwait University, the Alaska
SeaLife Center in Seward and the Osaka “Ring of Fire” Aquarium in Japan.
Recently, two of Cambridge Seven’s younger architects teamed up in a
lower-profile arena: furniture design. They were among the six contestants
chosen to represent the United States at Milan’s much-touted International
Furniture Fair. Achyut Kantawala, 29, who trained at Harvard’s Graduate School
of Design, is originally from India; Edward Ng, 27, who studied at the Rhode
Island School of Design, hails from Hong Kong. Calling their venture SEED, the
pair introduced their own form of modern luxe, which to them is all about
flexibility – but, Ng adds, “Not in a cheap way.”
“No tools are needed to
put our furniture together,” Kantawala explains, “and no screws. Everything is
completely customizable and very light. SEED’s In & Out seating
collection, shown, is made of plywood and stainless steel and can be
reconfigured in myriad ways.
