The yacht was delivered on May 10, 2002; we departed on May 30, 2002,
for a 40,000-nautical-mile journey. Of the voyage’s 754 days, 150 days were pure
offshore passages; the rest was island hopping and time at anchor. When we found
a suitable bay and village, we would stay an average of a week to immerse
ourselves in the local community; visit the village chief, the school, the
church, pagoda or mosque; and explore the vicinity. Our route led to the
Galápagos, Easter Island, Mangareva (Gambier Islands), the Austral Islands, Îles
de la Société (Society Islands), Penrhyn, Samoa, Tonga, the Lau Group, New
Zealand and Nouméa (New Caledonia), Ile des Pins (Isle of Pines), Loyalty
Islands, Vanuatu, Torres, Santa Cruz and the Solomon Islands, Australia, Kupang,
Komodo and Bali, Phuket, the Mergui Archipelago, Cheduba Islands and Sittwe in
Myanmar, the Andaman Islands, Maldives, Chagos Archipelago, Aldabra and the
Cosmeldo Group, Seychelles and, finally, through the Suez Canal to the Athens
Olympics.
