Landfall: Eden Discovered

When French mariners, venturing from Mauritius, first claimed possession of the Seychelles in 1756, they were certain they had found the biblical Garden of Eden—and they just might have been on to something. With 115 unspoiled islands emerging from an underwater scuba paradise in the hurricane-free Indian Ocean, the Edenic appeal of the Seychelles (pronounced "say-shells") is undeniable.

Today, yachtsmen are choosing to make this remote island chain a regular stop on their winter route, and development of the country’s first full-service superyacht facility is set to open in December 2006 on Eden Island to accommodate them. (Click images to enlarge)

Located just off the eastern coast of Mahé, the main island, 99-acre Eden Island is a one-of-a-kind residential community featuring 480 freehold apartments, duplexes and villas, all on 16 hectares of private waterways. While ownership includes a private boat slip, either in front of the residence or nearby, visiting yachts up to 80 meters can be accommodated in the international marina.

Craig Heeger, CEO of Eden Island Development, explains, "My vision is to create a development that is in harmony with the environment, is unique in its style and design, and at the same time provides a broad range of facilities."

A joint venture between Eden Island Development Company (Seychelles) Ltd. and Hunt, Deltel & Co. Ltd., the marina will offer shore power (including three-phase), water, pump-out, landlines, cable, wireless Internet and laundry, as well as fueling facilities. Marina guests will also have access to a small hotel to be built on the island. Other shoreside facilities include a restaurant and bar, swimming pool, showers and a VIP lounge for visiting superyachts.

The marina’s location in the inner channel between Eden Island and Mahé will protect it from the southeast and northwest trade winds, providing safe harbor anchoring for yachts.
