| Back to Basics: J/124 08/01/2006 |

The J/124 provides an interesting complement to the three previously described boats. In keeping with J/Boats’ design philosophy, she is more performance oriented and is intended to be used for more extensive sailing, racing and the occasional afternoon outing. Furthermore, the J/124 is uncompromisingly modern in aspect, though her purposeful lines have an appealing grace of their own.
For the competition-minded sailor, the J/124 offers the sort of innovative thinking we expect from her builders. Her hull design is executed in high-tech composites molded by the SCRIMP resin-infusion process; her spars and rudder are carbon fiber; her sail controls are strategically located for optimal shorthanded sailing, although not compromised for competition should that occasion arise. To enhance performance, she is the only one of the group to sport a mainsheet traveler.
While her cockpit/interior ratio is slightly inferior to the other boats described here, she still sports high backrests and seats long enough for a nap. When describing her accommodations, the company states it plainly: "All the
important stuff is there." Although her six feet of headroom may be marginal to
some, she does offer full accommodations. More of a true cruising boat than the
others, the J/124 is nonetheless a successful hybrid that spans the two worlds
and well deserves consideration in this group. J/Boats |
