Back to Basics: Morris 36

Article Specs
The Morris 36, to paraphrase her brochure, "looks like the boat your grandfather sailed." She is a graceful and somewhat contemporary version of that endless parade of elegant yachts from the drawing board of Sparkman & Stephens. The word that comes to mind is "sweet."

Morris Yachts kept the M36 as uncomplicated as possible. Lazyjacks collect the mainsail, there is a roller-furling jib, and all lines lead aft to two control "pods." To make sailing even easier, the jib is self-tacking. The standard rig consists of a carbon-fiber mast and aluminum boom, saving weight aloft yet using more economical aluminum where possible.

The M36 shares the other daysailers’ large-cockpit/small cabin configuration; a cockpit dodger and teak decks are available. Morris Yachts claims one reason for the M36’s success (more than 30 boats sold in two and a half years!) is that she can be built bare-bones or as fancy as you wish. Morris provides an extensive menu of options, but keep in mind that the basic boat is sold complete and ready to sail. (Click image to enlarge)

Below, she is finished in traditional Herreshoff fashion, white surfaces with varnished trim. Sitting headroom is more than adequate, and in her basic configuration she is empty forward of the mast, although there is ample volume there for the optional V-berth. Dedicated afternoon sailors will find the M36 fine as is, while those tempted by the lure of a weekend escape will doubtless equip her more comfortably. Or they can wait for the new M42, her larger version. Either way, she’ll be a delight.
