A Sneak Preview of Notable Boats at the Show.

Fort Lauderdale Boat Show Preview: Must-See Megayachts

77' (23.5 m) Ocean Alexander 74
Known for its high-tech engineering, Ocean Alexander uses carbon-fiber–infused composite and a vacuum-bag layup technique in building its new 74 motor yacht. The resulting boat is lightweight, yet tough enough for offshore passages. Although she is a production model, the Asian shipyard offers owners quite a bit of flexibility in her layout. The flybridge has a variety of seating options, and a dayhead is available. The main-deck salon and galley come in different configurations, and the owner’s suite is offered with his-and-hers heads or a single head and walk-in closet. The 74’s interior, richly trimmed in sakura wood, also holds two guest staterooms and a crew quarters. www.oceanalexander.com (Click image to enlarge)

76' (23 m) Moloka’i Strait 75 Hercules
The first model in the new Moloka’i Strait 75 series, Hercules is an expedition yacht designed for ocean voyages in all latitudes. Her steel displacement hull features double-bottom construction and five watertight compartments for ultimate safety. But while her exterior is rugged enough to take on punishing seas, her interior is finely finished to luxury yacht standards, with satin-varnished woodwork and granite countertops. Sponberg Yacht Design created her layout, which includes three large staterooms located amidships for comfort while in a seaway. Although crew quarters are included in her general arrangement, Hercules was designed to be operated by an experienced owner. www.molokaistrait.com (Click image to enlarge)

74' (22.6 m) Viking 74 Convertible
Sleek and swift, the 74 Convertible is the new queen of New Jersey shipyard Viking’s sportfishing fleet. Twin MTU 2000 M93 diesels give her a top end of 39 knots and a cruising speed of 33 knots. The business end of the boat is the huge, 218-square-foot teak-soled cockpit, which includes a wide mezzanine deck overlooking the action. The yacht’s interior features hand-finished high-gloss teak joinery. Four staterooms with ensuite heads are standard, including a separate crew cabin aft, but a five-stateroom layout is also available. The Viking 74’s flybridge features a custom-built helm pod with single-lever electronic controls for precision maneuvers. www.vikingyachts.com (Click image to enlarge)

71' (21.6 m) Marlow Explorer 70E Command Bridge
Built with high-strength materials including Kevlar composite and Corecell, the new Marlow Explorer 70E is certified to Germanischer Lloyd Class A standards for operation in wave heights over 18 feet and sustained winds of more than 40 knots. This world-girdling expedition yacht has a top speed of 26 knots with twin Caterpillar C18 diesels, but is equally comfortable cruising at a displacement speed of 8.3 knots—when her fuel use drops to nine gallons per hour. The yacht’s hand-crafted interior features high-gloss teak woodwork finished to the highest standard. A variety of layouts are available to suit her owner’s individual desires. www.marlowexplorer.com (Click image to enlarge)

66' (20 m) Nordhavn 64
Pacific Asian Enterprises (PAE), which designs and imports 14 models of the well-known Nordhavn series of yachts, has incorporated the company’s latest styling concepts in its new Nordhavn 64, designed by Jeff Leishman. The full-displacement yacht showcases PAE’s innovative approach to creating spacious interior accommodations in a relatively compact bluewater passagemaker with a range of 2,800 nautical miles. The boat has a high level of interior and mechanical outfitting and an impressive inventory of standard equipment and features, including elegant appliances and fixtures, granite countertops, stabilizers, bow and stern thrusters, 25-kilowatt generator, inverters, air conditioning and back-up systems. www.nordhavn.com (Click image to enlarge)
