Monaco Yacht Show Preview 2005

The Monaco Yacht Show (MYS), located in picturesque Port Hercules, will celebrate its 15th anniversary September 21 – 24. Continuing to evolve as one of the world’s most prestigious yachting events, the MYS is reorganizing its overall infrastructure this year: adding 80 meters to the floating pontoons, erecting a new 3,200-square-meter tent on the Darse Sud to accommodate 130 firms, and expanding the air-conditioned tent on Parvis Piscine. "All the key players in luxury yachting participate," says veteran show organizer Luc Pettavino. "Rather than duplicating the event from year to year, we listen to feedback and create new tools and space to accommodate our elite clientele."

The MYS is the only international boat show in the world devoted solely to luxury yachting. Shipyards and brokers present new models, latest launches and top quality megayachts here in Europe’s largest in-water display. Of the 90 motor and sailing yachts ranging from 65 to 263 feet exhibited in water, approximately 35 will be world premiere launches or 2005 deliveries.

"Over the years, the Monaco Yacht Show has really made its mark in the brokerage world as the leading and most exclusive yacht show in the megayacht arena, attracting buyers from all corners of the world. It also comes at the end of our summer season, when owners begin to think of moving up, in time for the Caribbean winter season," comments Alex Lees-Buckley from Camper & Nicholsons in Monaco.

On land, the quay houses 8,000 square meters of stands for the 530 exhibitors that represent international benchmarks in yachting equipment, services, naval architecture and design and luxury brands. The show’s ongoing success is evidenced by the fact that 100 percent of the venue’s exhibition space sold out by January 2005, eight months prior to show time. There is consistently a 95-percent return rate from exhibitors.

MYS also achieves global appeal through its cultural diversity and optimum security. Europe, the United States and the Middle East were effectively represented among the 21,000 plus visitors who attended last year. To enable the population of elite clientele to comfortably enjoy the show, MYS and the Principality of Monaco provide intense security. "Even recognized celebrities can walk the docks without fan interference or safety concerns," says Pettavino.

Requests are made each year to extend the four-day show into a five-day event. Pettavino replies, "We like that most participants leave the show wanting more and really look forward to coming back." – Michelle Fotiadis.

Haida G, formerly known as Rosenkavalier, is a 75-year old, steel-hulled classic motor yacht from the golden era of private yachting. Her new European owners ordered an extensive two-year refit that has restored her to her former glory. This beautiful, first-class gentleman’s yacht built in 1929 is fitted out with traditional furniture and fittings. At 218 feet and featuring seven staterooms, including a lavish owner’s suite, she accommodates 12 guests in unique style. A 7,500-nautical-mile range is achieved via two Krupp 6L40/67M engines, which provide a cruising speed of 11 knots and a top speed of 14 knots.

207-Foot Northern Star, Lürssen
Northern Star, launched in April 2005, was constructed for extensive cruising in cold climates. Advanced sound and vibration controls guarantee quiet running, while her ice-strengthened hull design and stabilizing system also provide maximum comfort. Her styling by Espen Øeino successfully achieves her owner’s desire for a traditional, expedition-styled exterior. Pauline Nunns designed the interior and exterior living spaces, which span six decks providing 12 guests with enormous area for entertainment and relaxation. Twin 1,850-hp Caterpillars enable a top speed of 15 knots and a 6,000-nautical-mile range. (Click image to enlarge)
