An elite fleet races across the Atlantic Ocean to glory.

Rolex Transatlantic Challenge 2005: Starting Line

May 21 marks the start of the Rolex Transatlantic Challenge 2005. Twenty sailing vessels, ranging from classic yacht to just-launched race machine, sleek sloop to three-masted clipper, will match wits and winds for 3,000 miles from New York to the Lizard in England. The fleet will be hosted by venerable yachting establishments on both sides of the pond: the New York Yacht Club in the U.S. and the Royal Yacht Squadron in the U.K. Among the many prizes at stake is the 100-year-old transatlantic record for monohull sailing yachts, set by the 185-foot schooner Atlantic at 12 days, four hours, one minute and 19 seconds, with skipper Charlie Barr at the helm.
