Latini Marine blends real racing performance with surprisingly stylish amenities.

New & Notable: A New Classic

Article Specs
Latini Marine 85
A second notable feature is the incredible perspective fore and aft from the salon. When the doors separating the various areas are latched open there is a clear view from bow to stern.

Inside, this 85-footer looks like a 100-footer, with no fewer than six cabins, five bathrooms, nav station and crew mess. The same slingshot construction visible on the outside becomes a structural element on the inside with shelving running along the length of both sides to support beds, sofas, kitchen units, closets and even a shower seat.

The seating/dining concept above deck is reproduced below with two tables that can accommodate 16 people. Bench seating provides easy stowage or can be folded up along its length. This modular design is something Lazzarini Pickering first explored aboard Wally B. Another Wally-esque feature is the fiddle on the continuous shelf structure that doubles as a grab rail, which is something of a Lazzarini Pickering trademark after appearing on the new Wally 80.

The interior is also easy to maintain when kids are aboard. (Click image to enlarge)

Three kinds of lighting are used on board to different effects. Primary illumination is provided by fluorescent lamps behind diffuser ceiling panels by Barrisol. Halogen lights are used in the flexible reading lamps, while LEDs provide accented illumination.

Despite its minimalist appearance, Roma’s interior is rich in functional details. To keep weight to a minimum, the storage units are made of specially thinned leather and then treated during the tanning process to make them water-resistant. The overhead closets have leather covers that can be held open with magnets, while bags strapped under the beds can be removed and used as elegant holdalls while ashore. Indeed, every detail aboard Roma seems to have a dual purpose. Even her four-meter tender can be motor-driven or double as a fast sailing skiff. And when stowed in the aft cockpit, it continues the shape of the stern and camber of the deck so when covered with a pad it blends into the furnishings as extra seating. By blurring the seemingly insurmountable distinction between fast racing and comfortable cruising, Roma represents a new trajectory in design and technology. (Click image to enlarge)
