Mochi Craft’s 74 Dolphin is an arresting synthesis of Italian styling and Downeast good looks.

Mochi Craft’s 74
As chairman and president of one of the largest and most diverse yacht manufacturing groups in the world, Norberto Ferretti must have a tough time picking one favorite in the fleet. But judging from the way Ferretti’s Mochi Craft business unit presents its flagship 74 Dolphin, it’s easy to believe that he may be partial to this particular vessel.

The goal for Studio Victory Design and Ferretti Group engineers was to "reinterpret the New England lobster-boat style with Mediterranean sensitivities." The result might best be described as Lobster Fra’ Diavolo—a spicy twist on a well-liked foundation. Regardless of labels, the 74 has scored with public tastes. Modestly sized but well proportioned, the 74 Dolphin looks at home in a variety of ports and allows her owners to feel comfortable at home as well, with surprisingly generous elbow room for those who want to spend extended periods aboard.

The Mochi Craft’s sinuous hull is topped by an equally graceful superstructure, which gives her a coupe-like feel. Wraparound forward windows benefit the internal helm and galley, while two lower ones light the living and dining areas. The flybridge has three distinct zones: Forward is dining and socializing, amidships is an external helm, and aft is a bar and grill. Fear not, plenty of sunbathing is available on the bow, reached via swelling teak side decks that culminate at the forepeak. (Click image to enlarge

Designed simply, the aft deck has only a central teak table and twin benches, leaving the rest of the space open. An electric sunshade extends from the fixed roof to fend off the elements. Below, a spacious garage houses both a tender and a PWC, opening hydraulically to reveal a teak deck on the opposite side of the transom door.

The 74’s exterior signatures are high-gloss teak railings and two-tone color schemes available in colors including Wonderful Turquoise, Oriental Beige, Deep Blue and Exotic Red.

The classically finished interior utilizes rich caramel leathers and open-pore teak and makes the 74 Dolphin as appealing indoors as she is on deck. The designers have provided the perfect blank slate for owners to personalize.

On the main deck, the living area is completely open from the windshield to the aft bulkhead. The aft boundary of this space, comprising a sliding door and several large windows, brings the outdoors in whether open or shut. A teak-and-holly sole in matte finish pulls the entire space together.

The tender garage is also oversized; when lowered, its door is a nice swim platform. (Click image to enlarge)

Belowdecks, accommodations are available for eight. The master cabin is directly at the foot of the stairs and features a small sofa and independent bathrooms joined by a choice of shower or spa bath. This particular 74 was finished with an azure blue mosaic in the spa bath—a design choice that fits the area well. A forward VIP, starboard double with twin berths and a versatile fourth cabin fill the rest of the deck. This fourth cabin features a low "French" bed with a second Pullman berth, though optional layouts make it an owner’s office, a laundry room or even a galley. All accommodations are ensuite and kept simple and elegant with teak-and-holly soles, teak veneers and shoji-style door panels, which resemble the three-by-three paned windows inherent in the vernacular of New England architecture.

Compared to similar yachts in her range, she is 20 percent wider, about five tons heavier and nearly three feet longer at the waterline. Her generous proportions accommodate two 1,522-hp MTU engines, giving her a top speed of 32 knots and a cruising speed of 28 knots. Ferretti’s exclusive ARG stabilization system is available as an option.
