Sanlorenzo and Viking Custom Yachts combine 90 years of experience to craft their latest series.

New & Notable: Made for America

Sanlorenzo 88
About a year ago, Italian shipyard Sanlorenzo spoke with a few editors from ShowBoats International about the company’s partnership with Viking Custom Yachts. They were extremely enthusiastic about the arrangement and believed it would be mutually beneficial. The Italian Sanlorenzo brand would be introduced to America with the renowned service and support of Viking. It sounded wonderful, but our editors had yet to inspect a vessel, and we wondered how, with such decidedly different national personalities, Americans would come to love a yacht adored for years by the European market.

A visit to the Sanlorenzo 88 at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show last fall closed the loop on the conversation and answered our question. The composite-construction motor yacht is a shining example of the art of collaboration. Handsomely styled, the 88 combines the soul of an Italian yacht, encompassing superior fit and finish and well-executed interior and exterior styling, with the physical elements Americans prefer: copious storage, myriad amenities, a spacious and comfortable layout and a U.S. service network.

The ultimate goal, says Viking Custom Yachts Marketing Director James Nobel, is "to deliver an ownership experience as superior on these vessels as with all of our U.S.-built vessels." Completely constructed in Italy by Sanlorenzo, the 88 is supplied with components from Viking, including her air-conditioning and refrigeration systems, to maximize serviceability in the United States. The final product is a Sanlorenzo motor yacht technically composed and supervised by the team at Viking Custom Yachts.

Inside and out, the 88 exudes clean styling. Few seams in her composite hull and superstructure are visible when walking around her side decks to the forward settee, which doubles as a sun bed. This very private area is a great spot to have breakfast and is also an area crewmembers can use via access from the galley. A great deal of thought went into quality of living for the crew—another example of American thinking aboard this Italian yacht.

Between the bow settee, aft deck with dining table and multi-purpose flybridge, this 88-footer offers a variety of distinct alfresco entertainment options. With access from either the raised pilothouse or the aft deck, the flybridge is an instant gathering place. Here, a soft, retractable panel is integrated into a fixed hardtop, providing the best of both sun and shade. Forward, a primary helm is to starboard with a wing station to port, and down a few steps the pilothouse proper provides amazing visibility for an indoor space as well as computer monitoring of every onboard system.

Dining, cooking and cocktails are all a footstep away on the bridge at either the starboard settee with teak table or the granite-topped bar to port. A Jenn-Air downdraft grill, refrigerator, ice maker, sink and storage round out the functional bar.

Susan Kerns, the founder of TDI Design, which for more than 30 years has been the driving force behind Viking Yachts and Viking Sport Cruisers interiors, was coaxed out of retirement to work on this series (the next introduction includes a 108-foot version). Kerns worked alongside Sandro Chiavetta, the in-house stylist for Sanlorenzo, to select and design fabrics, interiors, furniture and surfaces. The two coalesced to create a light and open interior on all levels from the staterooms up.
