Perini Navi’s second aluminum 56-meter provides performance to match its aesthetic qualities.

With the exception of her custom accommodations and several slight modifications, Santa Maria is a virtual sistership to Burrasca. She carries 1,492 square meters of working sail area. Her sails, which include a full-batten main and mizzen with in-boom furling, were built by North’s loft in Italy. As it has with all its boats, Perini built her high-tech aluminum mast spars. Her mainmast soars 59 meters above the waterline.

Her keel is relatively shallow-draft and has a high-aspect-ratio centerboard that rotates out around a pin, rather than dropping down through a trunk. Her balanced high-aspect-ratio rudder and skeg follow the Felicita West (193'6") approach. Her hull has a finer waterline forward and flatter, wider runs aft than many of her steel predecessors. Designer Ron Holland, who assisted Perini’s design team on the development of the new generation hull shape, notes, “Where you might not have bothered sailing in 10 knots of breeze before, on that boat you can get a pretty decent sail in those conditions.”

Her optimized sailing performance notwithstanding, Santa Maria’s interior, orchestrated by the head of the builder’s design department, Bernardo Chichi, is all Perini in all its glory. The yacht won the 2005 ShowBoats Award for Best Sailing Yacht Interior. Her interior is done in traditional cherry wood with matte finish, warm, blue silk panels chosen by the owner and an extensive collection of marine art. Her main deck comprises a semi-enclosed dining area and lounge under the deckhouse overhang and a formal salon, dining area, library and study inside.

Five elegant staterooms reside on the lower deck. The full-beam owner’s cabin aft has a sleeping area to starboard and a head to port, separated by an ample wardrobe. A small adjacent cabin can accommodate a nanny. Topsides, the flying bridge has a whirlpool and additional lounge seating.

According to Perini’s Fabricio Sgariglia, Santa Maria was built purely as a pleasure craft, although she may see some charter work. Her owner plans to spend considerable time aboard cruising, and the yacht is well equipped for making the most of that task. While not designed with a dedicated office as are many modern large yachts, her bridge combines space for the newest navigation and communications gear. Her garage houses an extensive complement of toys, including a dive compressor and full gear for eight.

Her design and systems are fully MCA-compliant. Her twin Deutz diesels are rated for a maximum continuous output of 1,239 horsepower each. She has a range under power of 4,000 miles at 14 knots and is capable of speeds in excess of 17 knots under sail.

One significant structural difference between Santa Maria and Burrasca is foredeck tender stowage. Burrasca carries 18-foot RIBs. Santa Maria’s twin 21-foot Castoldi diesel tenders required the deck being raised slightly to fit the tenders beneath deck hatches. She carries four Northern Lights generators, two 125-kW units, an 80 and a 20.

With some eight yachts currently under construction, including the much-anticipated 87-meter Maltese Falcon and two more 56s, Perini Navi is well positioned to finish the decade with a busy schedule of launches. With performance-oriented vessels like Santa Maria, you may find the company positioned for greater success on the race course as well.
