Perhaps more than aboard any other yacht afloat, a visit to Delphine is like
a voyage back in time. Her wide, promenade-style decks, intimate smoking and
card rooms and elegant salons evoke a stately, less hurried time in yachting
when boats served as focal points for leisurely travel and human interaction.
Given Delphine’s unusual history, which includes a fire and sinking, a true
restoration was difficult if not impossible to achieve. But the yacht’s current
owners have paid excruciating homage to the spirit of the original yacht,
including the decision to retain her unique, quadruple-expansion reciprocating
steam engine instead of converting her to diesel power. More than any other part
of Delphine, a visit to her extraordinary engine room is a visit to a bygone
era. Perhaps most remarkable is that the yacht’s historical look and feel have
been preserved while adhering to all required international safety
regulations.
