Highest Technical Achievement in a Sailing Yacht ~ Ranger
Ranger sailing yacht
Ranger sailing yacht
Like several of the year’s award-winning yachts, Ranger easily could have taken more than one prize. We chose to reward her for the really hard work that went into her creation. Any J-class yacht would be seductive and it would be as hard to imagine Glade Johnson not delivering a beautiful interior. But if you set out to build on the lines of history’s fastest J, your challenge is daunting. At any turn her owner could have made the project easier by accepting a boat that “looked” like a J, but compromised to contain costs, or to avoid Lloyds, MCA or J-class Association rules. He never settled for almost, and neither did the team involved in building her. From a hull so true she needed less than three millimeters of fairing, to engineering innovations for complex gear never envisioned in the original, Ranger is an unprecedented and laudable effort.
