This yacht is all about clever hydraulically powered solutions. Chief among
those is an unseen hangar for the jet helicopter her owner uses as a tender. As
he learned during four circumnavigations on earlier yachts, the ocean
environment and helicopters are poor companions and he often had to ferry his
helicopter to the next destination. Amels’ solution is a hydraulic landing
platform that rises from Ilona’s lower deck. Once the aircraft is aboard and
blades folded back, the platform tips forward and down into a helicopter recess
with deck hatches covering all. That’s not Ilona’s only trick. Flanking the
hangar are bays for 31-foot custom tenders, which deploy via hull doors and
overhead cranes. Cabana-type platforms open out forward of these bays to provide
guests access to tenders and the sea. The crew’s tender and rescue boat stow
forward on the main deck within yet another garage.
