Starship’s refit began as a moderate refurbishment and evolved into a massive undertaking and achievement. A staple on the charter scene, the 143-foot yacht retained her familiar name and unique exterior lines, but that’s all. A yearlong, blisteringly paced refit has rendered her brand new. The old Starship’s contemporary interior was dominated by pearlized gray lacquer joinery that did not translate well into the 21st century. Taking the entire interior down to metal left Claudette Bonville with a blank canvas, where she created a stunning traditional interior utilizing warm African makoré and lavish stonework. Gutting the interior also allowed the yacht’s spaces to be redefined, which eased crew operations and increased storage. Less obvious, but just as extensive, was the mechanical refit that replaced or rebuilt every system from stem to stern. In addition, the sun deck was extended with good ripple effects; on top of incorporating a much-needed Jacuzzi, the longer deck made it possible to move all the toys up from the bridge deck, leaving space for 12 to dine comfortably under cover.
