An offshore sailor’s desire for a sturdy boat with a good turn of speed and pleasing looks could have resulted in any number of straightforward designs. This team turned that desire into a masterwork with Adèle. Given equal precedence were her modern seakeeping qualities, whether sailing or motoring, her livability and her classic mahogany and teak aesthetics above and belowdecks. None was compromised for the other. All elements have been addressed successfully. Three tenders stow unobtrusively on deck. The owner’s privacy is assured by a deck cabin and cockpit situated aft of the action of the sailing cockpit, while social needs are met by an amidships cockpit with an eight-place drop-leaf table, surrounding settees and adjacent deckhouse. Mechanically, too, she is well thought out. For proper feel while hand steering, she has mechanical linkage, while a clutched hydraulic steering system, operated by any of three joysticks, is one of many redundant systems. With all sails set and drawing, Adèle exceeds expectations in form, function and beauty.
