It is admirable that people prone to seasickness still want to
go to sea and noteworthy when they literally go to the ends of the earth, in
this case Tasmania, for innovative solutions to their problem. Exploring the
trimaran ferry concept is one thing, but making the vessel look and live like a
yacht is quite another. Thus, White Rabbit is impressive in that her unusual
configuration—the first yacht for her builder—has been made to look quite
conventional. Twelve months of testing resulted in a ride control system from
Maritime Dynamics utilizing four huge stabilizer fins placed in the tunnels
created by the main and outer hulls, which reduces motion by 50 percent. Reduced
wetted surface makes her more efficient, and she hits a top speed of 19.5 knots
on twin 3512 Cats. More important, at half power, she clicks along at 16 knots,
reducing her carbon footprint without diminishing her owner’s enjoyment. Another
plus: Accommodations for all 16 guests are at main deck or above.
