oceAnco’s new build puts its best face forward, stern first.

Waterfront: Boarding Y702

"The stern is the yacht’s face," says designer Dan Lenard. "It’s the part of the boat that makes the first impression. It is the guests’ first experience with the character of the vessel."

The boat’s aft end is possessed of a purposeful dichotomy: For those arriving, it is the entrance to the yacht; once on board, it is the terrace. As oceAnco realizes the design of Y702, the stern reveals its powerful combination of purpose.

"Comfortable stairs are a strong architectural element, as well as a communication tool between the levels," Lenard says. The routes of the transom-flanking opera house–style stairways lead between the main deck and the water in grand style, ensuring life on board is well connected to the sea—a must for a Mediterranean-based yacht. The infinity-edge pool also connects the machine to the surrounding sea by its common medium. The name of the yacht will seemingly float above the pool’s glass aft wall, with overflow water passing behind the letters—quite the first impression for new arrivals.

The superyacht experience, Lenard says, comes from a domination of the technology (by oceAnco) and conceptual solutions (by Nuvolari-Lenard) that transform various spaces. Eel Kant, oceAnco’s managing director, says that the engineering and space available on Y702 allows the pool, a coveted and elegant feature, also to serve as a helipad, with the pool bottom rising to become flush with the deck. The aft deck, forward of the pool deck and two steps lower, creates the feeling of being "in the boat," Kant says. "It’s a cozy feeling, a sense of protection and safety, but it clearly sets levels. The aft deck is ‘in here.’ The pool deck, or the coast, is ‘out there.’"

For this architectural approach to work properly, says Kant, access to the technical area had to be relocated from its traditional space in the transom to the sides of the yacht. Tender mooring is at the hull-side garages on either side of the pool deck. In this way, a clear distinction between the tech areas and living spaces is achieved. Mooring hardware is at the extreme aft sides of the stern platform. Side mooring cleats and windlasses forward of the pool area are on the side decks.
