Amels Adds 212-Footer to Its Repertoire.

Propelled by the success of its Limited
Editions 171—Amels sold three from drawings alone, with the first to launch next
summer—the Dutch builder unveiled the concept and specifications for a 212-foot
(64.5-meter) successor at the Monaco Yacht Show last fall. The two models share
the styling philosophy of Britisher Tim Heywood, which accounts for the 212’s
long bow and generous outdoor living areas, including a magnificent
2,152-square-foot upper deck with swim-up bar, gymnasium and a semi-enclosed
alfresco dining area.
Amels tapped Andrew Winch to articulate the interior. Calling
it a "boldly large boat for its length," Winch gave the Amels 212 a luscious
interior concept that is anything but limited in terms of special features. Such
features include an enormous foyer and circulation area on the main deck, a
"collector’s corridor" leading to the owner’s suite and a pair of bridge-deck
VIP cabins with French balconies. Rather than being turnkey spec boats, the
Amels Limited Editions are "pre-designed and pre-engineered" to reduce client
wait time. They incorporate a full slate of oft-requested features such as
elevators, ZeroSpeed stabilization and side-launching tender garages, plus
integrated navigation and communication electronics. While dimensions and
structural interior elements are fixed, owners are permitted significant
personalization to the décor.
Amels engineers utilized fluid dynamics studies to optimize
hull efficiency for an estimated 17-knot top speed on a pair of 3516 Cat
diesels. Gray and blackwater treatment, catalytic converters and soot separators
are also part of this forward-looking package. The first Amels 212 will begin construction in spring 2008, with delivery anticipated in 2010.
