New U.S. Company Launches Classed Semi-Custom Line Built in Taiwan.
Waterfront: Calixas 105 Splashes

Calixas 105
The first offering from a new U.S.-based yachtbuilder splashed in Taiwan last November in the form of the Calixas 105. The Calixas (pronounced Cal-ee-ex-as) 105 is the brainchild of Texas businessman Montie Twining. Twining, an entrepreneur with no yachtbuilding experience, conceived the boat after a careful review of market trends. He enlisted Canadian naval architect Gregory C. Marshall, a longtime friend and boating partner, to design an eco-friendly, MCA-, ISO- and DNV-certified, full-displacement, semi-custom expedition-style motor yacht. After a year of due diligence, the pair settled on an international arrangement for construction comprising North American engineering and project management, Taiwanese structural fabrication and interiors supplied by experienced yards in New Zealand. The hull was built using the SCRIMP method of resin infusion.

The 105 will be part of a similarly conceived series ranging in length from 80 to 145 feet. According to Twining, the 105 is the largest private yacht in gross tonnage to leave Taiwan to date. It will arrive in the United States in time for the Miami International Boat Show.
