viking 74 yacht Viking grows its line of luxury fishing machines.

Waterfront: Convertible Queen

Article Specs Design
Viking 74
Viking’s latest and largest convertible sportfisher is equally at home campaigning on the tournament trail or cruising secluded Bahamas anchorages. Conceived by in-house design and engineering teams, the idea for the new 74 took root in input from clients and dealers. The company then employed exhaustive testing using a scale model to ensure it would meet performance criteria.

Serious bluewater anglers are accommodated by its 218-square-foot cockpit, outfitted with a transom door, recessed in-deck fish box and optional livewell and ice box.  A couple of steps up is the mezzanine observation area with aft-facing lounge, tackle cabinets, a bait freezer and stowage for bulky gear.

The salon, inside the hands-free, electric glass slider, shows off the yacht’s softer side with varnished teak joinery, sophisticated home-theater electronics and frameless side windows topped by ambient rope lighting. The 74 is notably wider, has a significantly larger deckhouse and is 14 inches higher than Viking’s 65, which allows for a flush main deck accommodating the salon and galley in one congenial open area. The galley’s granite countertop doubles as an additional eating area served by barstools. A dinette is to starboard.

The 74 is available with four or five staterooms, including a spacious amidships master suite featuring a king-size bed, settee, cedar-lined closets and entertainment center. Enclosing the bridge is another option.

Viking offers the new model with twin MTU 12V 2000 series engines as standard power, but clients are opting for the extra horsepower boost of 16V 2000s. Propeller pockets reduce the draft to five feet, seven inches and a 2,400-gallon fuel capacity offers a 550-nm range at a swift 27 knots – specs that can compete in both the fishing and cruising yacht markets.
