New Company Debuts Its First Model.

Waterfront: Grand Reception

Article Specs
Outer Reef 73
Outer Reef Yachts premiered its first model to acclaim at last February’s Miami Yacht & Brokerage Show. Sea Star, a 73-footer, exemplified the company’s commitment to offering semi-production yachts finished to a higher level of detail than is often seen in the market.

Built at the Tania Yacht Company in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, Sea Star was delivered to her Colorado owners just before the Miami show and is now sailing the Bahamas.

The hull is hand-laid FRP; PVC core sandwich construction lies above the waterline and vinylester barrier lamination protects against osmosis. The hull, superstructure and all bilges are finished in bright Awlgrip. (Click image to enlarge)

A hard chine design with flat sections aft holds her steady at both low and high speeds. Running gear is fully protected by a full-length keel, which also enhances tracking and stability. Standard systems specified for the 73 include some of the industry’s most respected brands: Northern Lights generators, Trac stabilizers, Headhunter toilets, Maxwell winches, Stidd helm chairs and a Nautical Structure deck crane.

Eleven feet of freeboard at the bow and a 20-foot, six-inch beam provide plenty of interior volume with exceptional headroom below. A full-beam master suite is situated amidships, while a twin and a VIP guest cabin are forward. All staterooms are ensuite and feature cedar-lined closets and granite countertops. On the main deck, a U-shaped galley separates the main salon aft and the spacious wheelhouse forward. Since the owners purchased the yacht just after tooling, they were able to choose the glossy cherry finish. They hired design firm Argonautica for the décor. (Click image to enlarge)

A crew cabin and head are located in the stern. However, the 73 is designed to be owner-operated if desired, so the crew area is finished to the same exacting standards as the guest quarters. Full walk-around decks, bow and stern thrusters and multiple control stations ease handling.

Power comes from standard twin 800-hp Caterpillar 3406E diesels. With this package, Sea Star tops out at 17 knots. Another option is the Caterpillar C18 package; twin engines rated at 1,000 horsepower each are predicted to give her a 24-knot max speed.

Outer Reef is building another 73 and has finished the tooling for a new series of 60- to 65-footers. Sea Star’s debut was auspicious for the new company, which sold six of the smaller yachts between the Miami and Palm Beach boat shows.
