Waterfront: Hotchya Delivers Gaja
Russian military shipyard produces its first yacht.

Article Specs
Hotchya 115
Named after her owner’s favorite Barbaresco wine, 35-meter (115-foot) Gaja is the first hull to come out of Russian Hotchya Shipyard. The vessel’s chunky, explorer-style exterior styling is by Newcruise Yacht Projects & Design. Newcruise co-director and head designer Frank Neubelt was impressed with the build quality of the yacht. Constructed on-site at a high-security naval shipyard north of the Arctic Circle, metalworkers applied the same precision engineering standards that they would to a nuclear submarine.

The yacht is certainly hardy, and after her launch in 2006, she made a 6,000-mile maiden voyage to Turkey, where Metrica fitted out her equally precise Dölker and Voges interior. The interior is spacious with good separation between crew and guest areas. The master suite, with a bathroom lined in Portoro marble and a dedicated dressing room, is located on the upper deck and features its own aft deck where the owner and his family like to breakfast in private.

Guest accommodations consist of one twin and two double cabins on the lower deck, for a total of eight guests served by seven crew. Thanks to the high-volume interior, there is room for a panoramic library-cum-TV lounge facing forward on the main deck. Unusual are some of the décor solutions, such as curtains to divide the dining room and main salon. Besides the sun deck, there is an additional sun bed in front of the Portuguese bridge on the upper deck and seating in the bow. Powered by twin 550-hp Caterpillar 3406Es, Gaja has a maximum speed of 14 knots and, at a cruising speed of 12 knots (when fuel consumption is just 160 liters per hour for both engines), a range of 3,500 nautical miles.
