JFA Launches Retro Escort Vessel.
Waterfront: J-Class Companion

JFA 138
Created to escort the reborn J-Class yacht Velsheda, 138-foot (42.1-meter) Bystander had to look the part. Dick Young looked to 1930s workboats—the decade of Velsheda’s original launch—for inspiration for the interior and exterior design. Naval architecture of the steel hull and aluminum superstructure is by Vripack, and it was built to Lloyd’s registry and MCA compliance by JFA.

The lower deck is dedicated to the crew quarters, galley and engine room. The main deck features the salon and dining room, two guest cabins and the owner’s suite. The pilothouse sits atop the upper deck, which includes a pair of ensuite VIP cabins, a bar, observation lounge and, for a contemporary touch, a Jacuzzi. Forward is a high bow, steep stem and high bulwarks. Aft, setting the period ambiance, are timber-framed windows, broad-plank wooden soles and beamed overheads.

Powered by a pair of Caterpillar 720-hp engines, she cruises at 13.4 knots, with a range in excess of 5,400 nautical miles.
