Lazzara’s new LSX Quad 75 offers innovative joystick-controlled propulsion.

Waterfront: Quad Power

Article Specs
Lazzara 75
Lazzara LSX. Are we talking Porsche? Audi? Lexus? The name resonates a swank new luxury vehicle. In this case, though, it’s a boat: the new Lazzara LSX Quad 75. It doesn’t have flashy alloy wheels and traction control, but it does have a truly innovative propulsion system thanks to Volvo Penta. Shortly before last year’s Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, a courier delivered a mysterious package to my desk. Inside was a small, hard, silver suitcase. In the case was a car key. I instinctively pushed the button on the key, activating an audio recording inviting me to a secretive soiree in St. Petersburg, Florida. The invitation promised a revolutionary presentation. Always game for the next new thing, I booked a flight.

While Lazzara’s presentation was shrouded in secrecy, what is no mystery is that Lazzara Yachts represents a family affair spanning 50 years and three generations. Building yachts from 68 to 110 feet, the company excels in composite construction. Founder Vince Lazzara’s sons, Dick and Brad, officiated at the ceremony in Florida, joined by their mom and their sons and daughters. A red carpet, smoke generators, a multimedia presentation and bleacher seating transformed Lazzara’s Tampa boatyard into a stage set. The centerpiece was a large, shapely lump concealed under a black cloth. (Click image to enlarge)

At the appropriate moment, the shroud was pulled back to reveal the new LSX Quad. Incredibly, this combined brainchild of Lazzara and Volvo Penta went from conception to completion in just 10 months. The result is absolutely stunning. Four couples can dine in the country kitchen, sleep in spacious comfort and have privacy from one another in various venues around the deck. Slick European styling with a clean, modern interior completes the aesthetics package that envelops the vessel’s state-of-the-art engineering. The real hook, though, is the propulsion system. The Volvo Penta IPS system features four engines and eight forward-facing props. The system promises to deliver impressive power with a high level of fuel economy and a top speed of 35 knots with minimal noise. The hull Lazzara designed to accommodate the IPS will offer impressive stability and a comfortable ride. (Click image to enlarge)

During a sea trial the morning after the unveiling, I was handed the helm—rather, the joystick control. The slightest motion of my thumb and forefinger moved the vessel backward, forward and, better still, sideways, virtually eliminating most docking dilemmas. The IPS requires just 187 meters for a full turn—one-third less distance than comparable inboards and delivered as smooth as butter. (Click image to enlarge)
