Hatteras Fuses Fishing Function With Cruising Comfort.

Waterfront: Room to Reel

Article Specs
Hatteras 68
In a market heavy with fiberglass sportfishing convertibles, the new 68 from Hatteras Yachts demands attention for innovations that add true cruising comfort to a high-functioning fishing platform. It is creating a convertible that stands apart from the crowd.

Most significant among the Hatteras 68’s attributes is the huge, 21-foot, six-inch beam that gives it voluminous space in all living areas – room unmatched aboard comparable vessels. In fact, the four-stateroom, four-head convertible is actually wider than the Hatteras 80 Motor Yacht and the 90 Convertible. Its full-beam master stateroom offers ample legroom around the tapered king berth. Positioned amidships, the master also offers an expansive, cedar-lined walk-in closet, solid countertops and bowed-front cabinetry. (Click image to enlarge)

The guest stateroom is located in the bow, the third cabin is to starboard and the crew quarters for two is to port.

The salon and cockpit are generously apportioned, another benefit of the wide beam. In the salon, cherry joinery surrounds an appropriately appointed social center. The sliding door abaft leads to the 192-square-foot mezzanine cockpit. Modular construction allows owners to customize the layout of the freezer, icebox, baitwell and other components. Time spent in the 68’s cockpit is more enjoyable thanks to an inventive exhaust system that redirects spent fuel gases down and out through submerged hull vents once the engines reach 1,400 rpm, reducing fumes and noise.

Followers of Hatteras’ designs will immediately notice the extreme flare of the bow, far greater than on any previous model. The curvature smoothes the ride in head seas and, along with double chines, throws spray out and down. Aficionados also will notice that the hull lacks side air vents. Fans under the cockpit coaming draw in air for engine cooling, both reducing the possibility of salt water entering the engine room and streamlining the hull’s exterior. The fans also eliminate the need for air-induction boxes, opening up engine-room workspace.

Power is provided by twin Caterpillar C30s, but three larger options – Cats or MTUs – are available upgrades. An enclosed flybridge is optional.
