Vitters 140
Vitters Shipyard has built three iterations of Ed Dubois’ 140-foot sloop design, each distinctly different from the next. Following in the wake of sisterships African Queen and Whirlaway comes Gimlä, which translates to “Seventh Heaven” in Swedish. Jan Vitters, managing director of the shipyard, prides himself in the fact that the yacht was delivered “absolutely on time.”

Built with an aluminum hull and superstructure, Gimlä features a contemporary, Scandinavian-inspired interior by Dick Young Designs. Light, matte-varnished birchwood and oiled teak combine to give her living spaces an open, airy feeling. Overheads feature limed birchwood beams. In a feat of engineering, all the lines in her joinerwork match up seamlessly. “Everything is one line through the whole boat,” Vitters says. The only downside is that some of the hand-crafted cabinetry has sharp edges, which might cause a bruise or two in rough seas.

Mixed materials such as sculpted stone embedded with fossils and brushed stainless steel enhance Gimlä’s two-level, sauna-equipped owner’s suite and her four guest staterooms, each with ensuite bath. Four crew cabins lie forward, accommodating up to eight.

The cockpit, shaded by a large soft top, provides a central social area for the yacht’s guests. Water toys include a pair of sailing dinghies for match racing, painted to match Gimlä’s blue hull. The dinghies are stored in a stern garage along with a 19-foot Novurania tender.

Her top speed under power is 15 knots and she can make 18 knots under sail. The carbon fiber spars were built by Marten Spars in New Zealand. The mast reaches 155 feet above the deck, almost to seventh heaven.
