Waterfront: Viewing Y702

Current superyacht design concepts generally maximize interior volumes to the point where the exterior of a yacht can be perceived only from a vantage point off the yacht. Dan Lenard notes that although the concept is a major characteristic of automotive design, one we are familiar with and enjoy, a yacht doesn’t immediately enjoy that personal perspective.

Lenard says that large yachts are immense objects, corresponding to our perception of real estate. "They correspond to our knowledge as a design object only when seen in drawings, as scale models, when leaving them with a tender, when seen from another yacht, or in the best of all cases, when moored first in a row in Monte-Carlo." The concept that distinguishes Y702 begins with the space around the architecture. Lenard says, "If you want to present the design, you have to assure the observer a distance for correct perception of the volumes."

OceAnco wanted to build a boat that was outside the box—literally. The owner found the redistribution and rescale of the volumes elegant enough and encouraged the concept. From any of Y702’s aft decks, integral sight lines, up, down, fore and aft provide varied visual experiences and perceptions of the superstructure as an architectural object. The sculpted shapes, as architectural elements, build toward the top of the superstructure, creating the base for the cathedral-like mast, delivering a logical conclusion to the aft-deck architecture as it streams forward. Overall this concept creates an irresistible invitation to enter Y702.

"Being on board and seeing the yacht at the same time was the target," Lenard says.

From the pool, much of the yacht’s exterior is visible. The same architectural language is in use once an observer moves to the upper decks and looks down to the aft decks below, another uncommon view in contemporary yacht design.
