The yacht design firm Sparkman & Stephens announced in December that it named Greg Matzat as president. Matzat, who formerly served as the firm’s chief naval architect and executive vice president, is only the sixth person to hold the top title in the firm’s 78-year history. As part of the new watch, Bruce Johnson, the firm’s chief designer, has been promoted to executive vice president. Matzat has been with the company since 1989. Sadly, Matzat’s predecessor, Mitch Neff, who stepped down in November to focus on brokerage, died early in the year of complications related to lung cancer. "Mitch enjoyed helping others with a passion for boats and his success was a result of his honesty and directness," Matzat said of Neff. "He didn’t have clients, he had friends."
