Destined to be one of the world’s top five yachts, Y702 takes shape at oceAnco.

Waterfront: A Different Language

Y702, 267 feet (81.27 meters) of Nuvolari-Lenard–designed yacht, is building at oceAnco. It promises to be an impressive vessel. After all, says Dan Lenard, "The owner requested a boat that would consistently make the list of the top five best yachts in the world."

Design work began on Y702 at Nuvolari-Lenard’s office in June 2005. The hull and superstructure arrived at the yard 10 months later. The accelerated construction was possible because the hull design and engineering had been approved for Y701, which was already in build at oceAnco.

Designing Y702’s superstructure, which defines the above-deck interior spaces, Lenard says, required a new design language. "We’ve looked forward to doing a boat where we can actually throw spaces away to make it nice and not worry about the volume."

Reduced overhangs allow more use of the aft deck space. This offers less enclosed volume than on what Lenard calls a "real estate" yacht—one that typically carries the enclosed spaces well aft. There is no compromise regarding space. Consider that the top includes the enclosed bridge, captain’s quarters, skylounge and a sun deck.

The new language includes some interesting phrasing. "We decided to land the nine-passenger chopper on the main deck and rotate the design around it," Lenard says—a definitive proof of concept. When required, the main-deck pool morphs into a helipad.

Jeroen Mulder, project manager, says: "Attention was given to the design of the heli-platform under the weight of a helicopter. By moving the platform up and down using spindles, instead of levers or hydraulic cylinders, there is less chance of the platform accidentally lowering due to the weight. Therefore, the locking pins that hold the platform in place are reduced in size, making it possible to reduce the platform’s thickness."

The distinct language of Y702 will become more evident as she progresses toward her spring 2007 launch. By mid-September 2006, the hull and superstructure were joined and structurally ready. The main machinery and systems were in place, insulation and interior installation were under way and exterior paint work had commenced.
