An icon reborn, and what undoubtedly will be one of the most exclusive
sailing charter yachts on the oceans, was christened in Holland in March. The
re-creation of the legendary schooner yacht Atlantic, holder of the transatlantic monohull sailing record for 100 years,
slipped into the water at the Van der Graaf shipyard in the Netherlands 103
years after her namesake and progenitor set, with the legendary captain Charlie
Barr, what was to become one of the most elusive records in the sport.
The new Atlantic is the brainchild of Dutchman Ed
Kastelein, who has been involved in the re-creations of a number of well-known
classics. William Gardner designed the original. Assisted by yachting historian
John Lammerts van Bueren, Kastelein gathered copies of drawings of the original
schooner from archives in the United States, including those at the MIT Museum.
Doug Peterson, acting as consulting naval architect, digitized the original
plans. The Netherlands’ MasterShip Services produced the structural designs for
construction using modern methods and materials, such as a welded rather than a
riveted hull.
Her fit-out is expected to take an additional year or more. She will
accommodate 12 guests and 11 crew and will be available for charter. Stay
