Derecktor Signs Contract to Build the Largest U.S. Yacht in 75 Years.
Waterfront: Big Deal

Sixty-year-old Derecktor Shipyards, which has an earned reputation for building significant motor and sailing yachts as well as commercial vessels, announced signing a contract to construct an 85.3-meter (280-foot) private motor yacht. The 2,800-ton project will be the biggest yacht built in the United States in 75 years—possibly in all of U.S. history—if measured by displacement rather than length.

Derecktor’s client is an experienced yachtsman who previously owned two large European-built yachts. Tim Heywood will design the Derecktor 85’s exterior, Azure Naval Architects will handle the naval architecture and Liz Dalton of Dalton Designs Inc. will create the interior styling. Within six decks and a 14.3-meter (46.9-foot) beam, the superyacht will provide accommodations for up to 14 guests and 24 crewmembers. Built to MCA LY2 code at Derecktor’s Connecticut yard, left, with a steel hull and aluminum superstructure, she will be a small but proper ship capable of extended voyages throughout the oceans of the world.
