Waterfront: Carbon-Fiber Flyer
Philippe Briand Creates a Cutting-Edge Design for 37-Meter Bristolian.

Yachting Developments 121
Veteran offshore racing sailor Michael Cannon has commissioned an innovative 37-meter (121-foot) sailing yacht from French high-performance yacht designer Philippe Briand. New Zealand’s Yachting Developments shipyard is building the new Bristolian of carbon-fiber composite, with consultation by Godfrey Cray and project management by Peter Tabone. The high-tech sailing yacht is due to launch in late 2007.

Briand’s plans for Bristolian incorporate two sleek helm pods and an ultra-low-profile deckhouse, with a large exterior dining and lounge area located in between. The lightweight interior will sleep six in an owner’s stateroom and twin guest cabins. Thanks to the lifting keel, the crew will be able to reduce the yacht’s draft from 5.25 to 3.25 meters when necessary. Displacing only 130 tons with an extended waterline length of 33.4 meters and a huge 1,280-square-meter downwind sail area, Bristolian is designed to fly across the waves.
