Two new VPLP designs are in build.

Waterfront: Cat Men Collaborate Again

As multihulls gain notoriety, the number of custom and large sailing catamaran projects is increasing. The names of two of the world’s most experienced multihull designers, Marc Van Peteghem and Vincent Lauriot Prévost (VPLP Yacht Design), show up regularly in the designer block on plans. Since their initial collaboration in 1984, they have drawn 24 cruising cats, both custom and production models. Though benefiting from the team’s experience drawing 33 ocean racers, the designs remain spacious performance cruisers.

In addition to the soon-to-launch 145-foot Gemini, the team has two new carbon composite designs building on opposite sides of the equator. Moxie Yachts Ltd. is producing a 61-foot performance cruiser model. The first two yachts are currently under construction at Jaz Marine, in Cape Town, South Africa, with launches scheduled for fall 2009. Milan-based interior designer Anne Monique Bonadei provided a unique interior with two round companionways opening through glass sliders to the salon. The owner’s suite and three guest staterooms, two in each hull and all ensuite, sleep six in three doubles, while the fourth features a double and a Pullman bunk. On deck, 2,153 square feet of main and jib will hoist on a 79-foot, rotating carbon spar and boom. Steering stations are located in each hull just abaft amidships.

Cata-rina, a 100-foot private one-off project, is currently under construction in Chaguaramas, Trinidad. Her interior will be completed in North America. Operations are handled from the coachroof flybridge. Features include an open aft deck and an interior salon with a three-stool bar. Three ensuite staterooms, including the owner’s suite, sleep seven in the port hull. A VIP suite is aft in the starboard hull. Five crew are quartered forward in three cabins, and the galley and crew mess are down amidships.
