Waterfront: Custom Commuter
Wave-piercer trimaran building in Mauritius.

Loomis 72
An owner desiring high-speed luxury travel between Mauritius and Saint Brandon in the Indian Ocean has commissioned the Craig Loomes Design Group to create a very unusual vessel. Configured as a two-deck, wave-piercer trimaran, the 22-meter performance yacht is intended to maximize passenger comfort in rough weather. The hulls will pierce through, rather than pitch over the seas.

Range was the defining performance criteria. The return trip between the two islands is about 500 nautical miles. With a 1,600-gallon fuel capacity, the yacht will be able to cruise 600 nautical miles at a swift 40 knots.

Accommodations include a large cockpit, an adjacent galley and dinette, four guest cabins and a bridge with aircraft-style seating for the captain and seven passengers.

Construction will commence in early 2005 at a purpose-built yard in Mauritius set up by Diogene Marine. A small team of New Zealand boat builders will manage the build.
