Waterfront: Fast Company
Advanced Yachting Technologies to Splash Turbine Yacht.

Dan Johnson and Rudy Richardson were convinced that the major sticking point for high-speed motor yachts was antiquated technology. So instead of just designing the products, they spent two years designing all the bits and pieces, and assembly methods as well. The first result of this effort, a 70-foot (21.3-meter), 90-knot-fast, $6 million turbine-powered thrill ride, will drop into the water in Fort Lauderdale in January. Johnson, no stranger to high-speed boatbuilding, utilized an advanced lightweight aluminum structural technique he pioneered in the nineties.

The patented construction process uses thermally blown, expanded, military-grade aluminum for skin and structural members, and Kevlar and honeycomb as the substrates for a deluxe three-cabin interior. This rocket ship features a computerized pitch program with aileron-type controls fore and aft for stability. The helmsman chooses the running angle, and the computer does the rest. A smart-start security program means that the boat can be started and the gull-wing entry doors activated from the dock—all the better for fast getaways. Johnson says the boat will also be available as a 70-knot-plus diesel model.
