The luscious colors of Mochi.

Waterfront: Italian Ice

Vanilla, pistachio and mango. As diverse, rich and luscious as Italian gelato, these fabulously fun Mochi Craft colors are hitting their stride in Florida. They blend into the coral, cream and aquamarine art deco hues of South Beach. A twist on the ubiquitous and ever-popular New England lobster boat, these sturdy vessels represent the difference between the tango and the two-step. Not only do they look good against the palette of Key West and the Bahamas, they also provide a cool, smooth ride.

Designed to strict Ferretti engineering standards, this line is the creation of Norberto Ferretti and Brunello Acampora of Studio Victory Design. The rounded shapes evoke the 1950s, but the technology is all twenty-first century.

Mochi Craft was acquired by the Ferretti Group in 2001 and put under the Ferretti Yachts wing in 2005. The signature Dolphin 51 first made its appearance in 2003 with its oriental beige hull. In 2004, the flagship Dolphin 74 made a hit with its turquoise hull. The company went wild in 2005 and instituted a fiery coral with its 44-footer. In 2006, the 64 debuted with aquamarine.

The lovely woods and fabrics the company uses emphasize fine Italian workmanship and style. Attention to detail is obvious. On each model, the swooping bollards are milled by one single block of stainless steel engraved with the namesake dolphin.

In 2007, the new 64 Fly project was presented in worldwide preview at the boot Düsseldorf boat show and will be on the water at the Cannes boat show in September, and the 74—the Mochi flagship, with its three deck levels including a flybridge, three guest cabins and owner’s suite, and signature large cockpit—won several yachting industry awards. The latter, king-size Mochi has a pair of 1,550-hp MAN engines that give it a cruising speed of 28 knots and a top speed of 32.5 knots. It also is possible to install ARG gyroscopic stabilizers (unique to the Ferretti Group) to reduce rolling.

No matter what the size, Mochis certainly turn heads. Whether in Venetian canals and dreaming of gelato or cruising through U.S. waterways and thinking about a malted milkshake at a Johnny Rockets diner, a Mochi is simply delicious.
