Waterfront: Jet Age
Water Jets and Classic Lines on Latest Huckins Jewelbox.

Huckins 56
Huckins Yacht, a fixture on the riverfront in Jacksonville, Florida, since 1929, has launched more than 450 yachts, runabouts and military patrol boats, but the 56-foot Linwood currently under construction is the first driven by water jets.

According to Cindy Purcell, Huckins’ president and owner, the boat is being built for a repeat customer who wanted shallower draft than possible for Huckins’ Quadraconic hull equipped with conventional propellers. “The fact that we still build our yachts one at a time allows us to take on unique projects like this,” she said. Powered by twin 670-hp Cummins engines linked to Hamilton jets, the boat is expected to achieve 30 knots.

The vessel’s retro lines—Linwoods were introduced in 1952—belie the latest in advanced composite construction and state-of–the-art systems. “For a vessel of its size, the Linwood is a dream to handle and maintain; a captain or mate is purely optional equipment,” said Purcell. The yacht will feature two ensuite staterooms and an open-plan lower salon plus semi-enclosed bridge and an upper lounge under the hardtop.
