"Grande" certainly sums up Island Capital
Group’s new Yacht Haven on Saint Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands. It is the
largest privately financed endeavor in the U.S.V.I. and will provide more than
5,000 linear feet of dock space, including 50 berths for yachts up to 450 feet
(137 meters). Elie Finegold, president of Yacht Haven’s parent company, says:
"We are witnessing an explosion of megayachts. There just aren’t enough
facilities to handle them, especially in the Caribbean." His assessment is
accurate. According to ShowBoats International’s 2006 Global Order
Book (SBI Dec./Jan.
2006), 15.5 miles of yachts are currently under
construction worldwide.
Yacht Haven’s first phase will include luxury condominiums,
80,000 square feet of high-end retail space and a private yacht club. Phase two
is now on the drawing board. "We will be creating a state-of-the-art marina
so that the owner’s luxury experience won’t stop when they step off the yacht."
Yacht Haven Grande is scheduled to open this winter.
