Factoría Naval Marín begins construction of world’s largest sailing ship.

Waterfront: Shiver Me Timbers

The Spanish shipyard Factoría Naval Marín has cut the first metal for Sea Cloud Hussar. At 445 feet, she will be the largest sailing ship in the world when finished in late 2009. The classically styled, three-masted (the mainmast is limited to a height of 190 feet to pass under the Bosporus Bridge) ship will hoist up to 13,124 square feet of sail. Designed by Íñigo Echenique, her current technology, state-of-the-art instrumentation and high-tensile-steel hull will be unobtrusive, allowing her passages to re-create the glamour and splendor of the great early twentieth century wooden sailing ships.

Sea Cloud Hussar, which will carry 100 crew and up to 138 passengers in 69 cabins and three suites, was ordered by Hansa Treuhand Holding AG of Germany, to be delivered to its cruise operator Sea Cloud Cruises. Hussar will join Sea Cloud and Sea Cloud II, both renowned for their classical and elegant styling, as the fleet’s new flagship.
