Tripp-Designed Sloop Begins Build at Nautor’s Swan.
Waterfront: What a Tripp!

Nautor’s Swan 78
The Custom Yacht Division of Nautor’s Swan in Finland has started work on a 78-foot design by Bill Tripp’s Connecticut studio. A lithe cruiser/racer intended to feel equally at home racing the North Atlantic or cruising the Med, this lifting-keel sloop is an evolution of Tripp’s increasing focus on high-performance sailing yachts. Without draft restrictions, the design features a deep, sleek foil shape not typical of cruiser/racers. The hull, constructed in advanced composites with prepreg carbon fiber and a Corecell core, is low-displacement, with a plumb bow and narrow waterlines. The vessel will have a modern sail plan with the latest in sail handling, such as a retractable bowsprit, furling headsails and asymmetric spinnakers, as well as Code Zeros. On deck, the 78-footer will have a low house with flush foredeck and hatches. Amidships is a guest cockpit with a stow-away dodger; aft, the sailing cockpit. Below are four staterooms—three ensuite—a spacious salon, a well-appointed galley and a roomy crew area for two. Construction is expected to take 18 months, with launch set for spring 2007.
