Waterfront: Danger Zone

EchoPilot’s new Collision Avoidance Sonar System (CASS) caught the interest of the National Marine Manufacturers Association, which gave it a 2004 Product Innovation Award at the MAATS show in Las Vegas. Transmitting a bat-like “swept chirp” every 1.5 seconds, and covering 60 degrees in the horizontal plane and approximately 30 degrees in the vertical plane, CASS immediately assesses hazards up to nearly three-quarters of a mile ahead of a boat. A color screen displays the range, bearing and depth of the target object and sounds an alarm when it’s 1,600 feet off the bow.
