Robert Eddy’s Models Are Accurate to the Last Detail.
Waterfront: Miniature Marvels

The term "boat model" somehow doesn’t acurately describe the finely wrought mini-yachts crafted by Robert H. Eddy of Camden, Maine. Eddy, who has been commissioned by the owners of such megayachts as 154-foot (47-meter) Andromeda la Dea and 156-foot (47.5-meter) Hyperion, invests 200 to 300 hours in preparation and 4,000 to 5,000 man-hours in building these works of art. The materials he uses—such as real gold for all the on-deck hardware—are often more expensive than those found on the original yacht. "It’s very hard to cut back on the detail," he says. "Where do you draw the line?"

Eddy works from actual plans furnished by naval architects and interior designers, often visiting his subject yacht several times. He is currently on his 28th model, a desktop version of the 288-foot (88-meter) Perini Navi The Maltese Falcon, which will be the fourth project he has done for her owner, Tom Perkins. Eddy’s models range from $100,000 to $200,000, depending on the level of detail.
