Marten Adds a Sun Awning to Its Rigging Repertoire.
Waterfront: Shady Business

Marten Spars’ latest innovation makes good use of the neglected space along the length of a sailboat’s Park Avenue boom to provide much-needed shade.

Sunfurl’s design brief includes safety, ease, efficiency, two-man operation, simple inspection and maintenance and pleasing aesthetics. Sunfurl is installed in the lightweight Park Avenue wing structures; retrofits to compatible booms are possible.

A single button activates 20 pneumatic cylinders that unlock and open two covers up to 12 meters long. The awning is easily unfurled and furled via two electrical mechanisms. When stowed, 10 locking cylinders automatically engage and mechanically lock the covers. Kevlar reinforcing along the edges stiffens and strengthens the Sunfurl fabric, and no mechanisms are visible from the cockpit.

A recent Sunfurl installation aboard a Dixon-designed 125-foot sloop put approximately 1,000 square feet of deck space under shade.
