Real-life technology has gotten to the point where James Bond-style amphibious cars are not only practical, they look good, too. The WaterCar, built in California by Dave March, is the latest to hit the highway—and waterway.

The four-speed convertible sports car seats four and can reach 125 miles per hour on land. Its 2,700-pound Camaro “funny car” fiberglass body sits on a lightweight stainless steel frame and a high-performance Corvette suspension. It has a 300-hp, 2.5-liter Turbo WRX Subaru engine mounted in the trunk and a water-ski pylon behind the back seat. On the water, the wheels retract and a Berkeley jet drive propels her to a top speed of 45 miles per hour.

Meanwhile, if any proof of concept was needed, Richard Branson, British business mogul and adventurer, has dispelled any doubts. He drove a slightly modified Gibbs Aquada, the U.K.’s answer to the WaterCar, across the English Channel in one hour and 40 minutes, establishing a new amphibious record.
