Waterfront: Uncommon Engines

MTU
Not satisfied with merely bench-testing the 2000 Common Rail series diesels it introduced in early 2004, MTU repowered a Mangusta
80 with a pair of the 10V engines.

The shiny silver 1,500-hp engines measure only five feet long; three feet, eight inches wide and four feet high. They fit well inside the footprint of the Mangusta’s previous 1,350-hp diesels. They are also easier to service, thanks to more accessible filters and a new, top-mounted ECU. Weighing in at 2.48 tons each, the 10Vs are 11 percent lighter than their predecessors. During sea trials in one-foot seas off Cannes, they increased the yacht’s top speed 26 percent to 37.8 knots. In addition, common-rail fuel injection gave them nine percent better fuel efficiency at 2,000 rpm. They were also quiet, measuring only 75 dB at the open helm at cruise. MTU 8V and 10V 2000 Common Rail engines are available now; 12V and 16V models are due to launch in February 2005.
