Anticipation prompts three significant innovations.
TechTalk: Engineering the Engine Room

First is a raw-water intake bypass for shallow water. To avoid sucking up mud or sand in shallow areas from the standard hull-bottom location of the raw-water inlet, Rasselas’ engineer can divert the pumps to a portside intake just below the waterline. Both intakes are plumbed to a pair of large sea chests, each of which can supply all necessary cooling water. A clogged strainer can thus be bypassed easily without having to take an engine off-line.

Second is a portside watertight service hatch with an MCA-approved swing-out door. A twist on the old soft-patch-in-a-salon-sole idea, this opening facilitates the removal of large equipment and will also be handy during dry dock. Although her dedicated generator room will accommodate Cat’s cleaner-burning C13 gensets, they weren’t available, so Rasselas is equipped with smaller C9s. The hatch and removable sections in engine room bulkheads will allow new gensets without having to cut metal and repaint.

Third is slow-speed ADS trolling gear on the Reintjes transmission that allows the yacht to ease from a dock quietly and in control. The trolling gear, in concert with the bow and stern thrusters, is also handy when waiting on bridges or locks. The gear steps down to the lowest propeller revolutions possible without stalling and is a simpler solution than variable pitch propellers.
