TechTalk: Ice Maiden: A Very Busy Basement

The lowest of Northern Star’s six levels, it is the most crucial to the logistics of prolonged voyaging.

This is the location not just for tankage of fuel and fresh water, but also for waste from the vessel’s plumbing system, which must be stored and treated before it can be pumped ashore, according to the seldom identical regional laws regarding waste treatment and discharge.

A tank deck is a technical space that also houses storage and systems essential for an orderly and comfortable existence on the upper levels.

Forward of the bi-level engine room, the tank deck has a commercial-grade laundry and linen storage; a medical supply storeroom; stowage for nonperishable food items; walk-in, industrial-grade freezer and refrigeration rooms and a cold room for storing fragile perishables such as the flowers. One of the chilled rooms stores compacted garbage until it can be disposed of ashore. All these storage compartments, plus engineering spaces with controls for the air-conditioning and other onboard systems, are efficiently laid out along a central corridor. An elevator that accesses all decks enables the crew to transport supplies to and from the tank deck more easily.
