TechTalk: Sound Reduction: Quiet Down

The quiet within Lady in Blue is not integral to her design. It is a result of the attention to detail by Amels and a few technical companies that know how to keep the yacht’s operating noises from traveling through the structure.

JVS in Holland specified the sound insulation material based on Intersona’s sound and vibration readings. The initial vibration readings were taken on her steel hull with bulkheads installed. Kor Floriyin, director at JVS, says that readings were taken three more times as the project progressed. "During the building we alter the calculations based on the natural frequency measurements."

Lady in Blue’s impressive sound readings were measured at 80-percent maximum continuous duty (MCD), motoring at 13.5 knots with HVAC operating normally. Quieting the two forward lower-deck guest cabins that are adjacent to the engine room was achieved by sandwiching the bulkhead to nearly 12 inches thick with a multiple-layer proprietary insulation package. The final readings there registered a very respectable 54 decibels.

Wouter Kleijpoel, project manager, says additional elements, such as the floating interior and engine and generator shock mounts, all combine to diminish the vibrations. Mounted on rubber pads, each cabin is its own unit, referred to as a "box-in-box" structure. Air-conditioning ducts must be wide enough to keep the air speed low, but not so big as to take up too much technical space. Conforming to MCA code of practice, the yacht’s fire-retardant integrity must also be upheld, limiting the materials choices.

Attention to detail is still important even after all the readings are taken and the appropriate materials specified. Kleijpoel says, "Amels makes sure that the various elements are properly installed and that the practice maintains the theory."
